Is My Week Unpluggable?

I watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang this morning, which my son could give two shits about. It's amazing that boy only wants to watch Jungle Book. Every child has that movie they get stuck on, but right now, it's mostly my fault since he can't exactly ask for me to put that movie on, I just do it for him because he likes it and he sits on the couch like a slack-jawed angel while I do chores.

People say "don't let your child watch television until he's two years old" My 1 and a half year old comes out of his bedroom and runs right for the living room, points at the tv and starts jibbering and pointing that he wants to watch tv. It made me stop in my tracks and think aloud "Holy crap, what sort monster have I created?"  I mean I put on Sprout for him and stuff, but mostly Caillou and the Wiggles! Even Elmo is stalking my tv set these days, only because it's Potty Time and I'm trying to get him excited about potty training, if thats even possible.

I read on Dr. Laura's website that Steve Jobs, yeah the Apple guy, didn't let his children even watch tv. Can you believe that? I find that ironic and hypocritical...yet, sorta brilliant. Can I do that? What does a child lose from not watching any tv or movies? More importantly, what can he gain?

How does one start to unplug? Just don't turn it on, right? Does music count? And then there's this question...what will he do all day? I mean, of course with Caillou and Wiggles and Sprout and stuff on tv, I can unload the dishwasher, sweep, dust, brush my teeth. Have we really hired tv to be our babysitters?

My Assignment:
Today's first half was tv all over the place, so the second half gets no tv for Chase or me.  I'll put some music on and give him a puzzle and a book. No laptop, no texting, all visually engaging media gets unplugged during the week.

I know what you're thinking...what about blogging? Maybe it''l be a twice a week or a nighttime think. There's always naptime, but not every naptime equals me-time. Like today's naptime, Max couldn't make up his mind on whether or not he was hungry or tired. So he decided to freak out instead and wake up Chase. ugh, there went that. Now I'm typing with one hand, feeding with the left and my "no visual media"goal is almost history as I put on Elmo for Chase so I can make him a pb&j in peace.

This will be tough. Have you ever tried it? What are your views on visual media?

Time off to collect, reflect, and connect.

I totally decided to take a week off to realign my priorities. I had everything backwards. First it was me time, then it was my kids, then it was Jason, my husband. This was all over the place. So I decided to take a week off from blogging to decide the kind of me, wife, and mother I intend to spend the rest of my life being. I didn't like how the stresses of being a stay at home mom weighed on my shoulders.

First off, to whomever thinks this job is easy, I extend this sentiment: It ain't bon bons and soap operas, sweetheart. And if you quit your job to live this life, there are certain pointers and guidelines you should definitely follow before you clap your hands in the air above your head and dive in.

So I present to you these pointers on being a stay at home mom [or SAHM] while keeping your sense of self and sanity all while still giving your husband [and yourself] the love and affection deserved. I'll give you a couple pointers a day or so as well as assignments. A little at a time though... I mean come on, I am a little busy here! :)

Have a budget and stick to it:
I was such a fly by the seat of my pants girl. I would just up and grab my purse and join a gym, or go to the mall and drop a hundred bucks or go buy a Juicy Couture treasure that would end up in a corner of my closet! Ugh, I miss those days but I don't sometimes. It's such a glass of ice water in the face when you live SO selfishly and then WHAM! Two little helpless sweethearts that depend on you! It ain't easy being on one income these days either.

I am completely blessed with family and friends that will watch the boys while I go grocery shopping and if this is a blessing you have, cash it in. You are twice as likely to blow your grocery budget with little ones in your cart because you are rushing! Did you know that? You aren't reviewing coupons. You aren't comparing prices, and you for SURE aren't reviewing your list. My advice: Maybe go to Food Max instead of Safeway. I conducted an experiment once, I brought my essentials list to Food Max one trip, and Safeway another. $120 compared to $260!! Same stuff. Okay I bought some extras like detergent and Kleenex but NOTHING that warranted an extra $140 bucks!!  This wasn't diamond Kleenex for cryin' out loud!

This goes for clothing as well, sorry girls. No more Prada and Gucci! I never bought that expensive crap anyways. I don't go to Nordstrom anymore, and I don't miss it one bit either! I am now all about Ross, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx! I also found and adore my local consignment stores for my kids. Never push your nose up at hand me downs! Why go to Janie and Jack on one income. I'm sorry if I sound judgmental, but paying $25 bucks for a pair of jeans for a one year old?? A $20 dollar onesie my newborn is going to shit himself in?! Are you JOKING right now?? I shop at the Walmart and Target. Even my discount stores sell great stuff for kids. I buy outfits that won't make me cringe when they squirt go-gurt all over the front of it. Messes happen! Don't dress your kids in expensive clothes if they are home playing and learning all day, who are you trying to impress?? Caillou and Elmo don't care!

Your SAHM assignment: Make your weekly budget on Sunday night {after bath, book, cuddle, and bed of course} Look through your cupboards and your fridge & freezer. Make a list, check it twice. Maybe reserve clothing purchases for upcoming events or once a month. It's a tough adjustment, but when buying for 4 [yes counting spouses AND kids] when you're used to shopping for YOU YOU YOU, it's a rude awakening, for sure, but very do-able!

Tip of the day: Try cooking casseroles and crock pot meals instead of being unprepared and ordering a pizza. That way you save money AND have lunch for the next day! By deciding what's going on the table that night at around 1 or 2pm, you're less likely to be a frantic mess come dinner time. It's as simple as this: at 2pm-ish "Hmm, tonight I'll make tacos, I have the stuff for it." Then take the ground beef you sectioned off from buying bulk [we'll talk about this later] from the freezer, and go about your day.

See a pattern? Yes! This is all about planning! Making a plan and sticking to it, in more ways than just a budget, will make your job a lot easier! Your job is important! Make that your new mantra when you get frazzled, which happens A LOT!

Till Tomorrow-ish.

Throbbing..

I'm not talking about a dirty adjective in a love novel, I'm using this word to describe the sensation my head was experiencing today. I'm sorry such a late post for the day! When your brain is pounding out of your brain, typing on a white screen is very undesirable. So I'm making this post short and sweet today. My apologies.

Tonight for dinner: Black Eyed Pea chili with a sweet potato and tomato base. Clumps of broccoli and onion and garlic make it super hearty and fiber full! Oh yeah!!  As I type this my son is under the table grunting away trying to poop. Such a lovely soundtrack my life would make!

Well I guess I better change him, the grunting has ended and that's my cue. Jason works overtime AGAIN today. Hmmpf. I know it's extra and NEEDED money, but having him home on time is so much better. I should shut up and be grateful my hubby is able to come home everyday, huh....yeah, shutting up.

Hopefully I'll have more to offer you guys tomorrow. The real question is: did I eat healthy today? YES I did, even with that brat Aunt Flo lurking around...I hate her...

                                                               xoxo,

living an "On Demand" lifestyle...

I hate directv. I really miss Comcast. What a world we live in where I miss having television under MY control! It sounds selfish, but I want On Demand back so I can choose for my son to watch certain shows while I get things done. Any mother who says TV is bad under the age of two, to you I say, I don't have it on all day. I only put some things on for him so I can unload the dishwasher, maybe even change into a different pair of sweats...or brush my teeth. And it's always educational!

My contract is up in June and I fully intend to give them the finger [yes, that one] and going back to Comcast.

What provider do you have? Are you happy?

In other news, it's raining out and these are the days I make a soup or stew all day :) hmmm I wonder what I should whip up today...

At some point,I need to do laundry, unload/reload the dishwasher, and go over my floors....oh yeah, and I should work out. No matter what I started eating right today, multi grain cheerios loaded with bananas and berries. I need to chug a few big glasses of water though.

Well, it's time to get started!

A weekend in review :)

Good Morning!

This weekend opened with a fabulous Friday night hanging out with my best friend Jessica and her hubby and their adorable son Sean. Sean is only 5 months older than Chase so they played together and it was precious!! I love watching them parallel play. They didn't fight too much over the same toys, I guess as much as expected. They are very cute :) Jessica and I went online and took a ride down memory lane, that was big fun!

Jason and I went to our little cousin Julianna's baptism on Saturday. It was very nice, actually! Then we went back to their house and got to hang out with my cousins all day!! It was a lovely way to spend a Saturday. I want to get Chase and Max baptized together. Catholic churches are so strict though! You have to take a class, for like 2 hours! It's sort of annoying how many rules there are, but it's such a pretty religion. I love the stained glass, the statues. I love the rosary beads and all the prayers, I can still remember a majority of them!

Jason and I caught up on some early spring/late winter cleaning. Some grocery shopping and scrubbing and then Jason's parents and his brother Jerry and his wife Lisa came for homemade fajitas! I did an awesome job if I do say so myself!

Happy Monday!

xoxo - Bekki!

Time to find some more time!

Last night I suprised Jason with childcare and took him out to dinner for his 30th birthday. We went to Benihana's. My spicy tofu was awesome and the fried rice is a once in a while indulgence my hips won't thank me for, but oh well. We shared sushi, edamame, green tea, dinner, and laughs. And even though his 20's are behind him, I look forward to the rest of our years to come!

Ever get in one of those funks? When you don't want to clean, don't want to get dressed? Well, I need to snap out of this one. I need to have my house cleaned and myself gussied up, and I just can't seem to. I always get my stuff done during nap times. but for some reason, Max decided to be hungry  during nap time. Silly me for forgetting newborns make their own schedules. So here I sit, at 1:15. Feeding Max with one hand, typing with the other. Waiting for MY mommy to get here so I can shower and go get groceries. We are having friends over for dinner tonight, unless she texted me otherwise, I'll find out soon, my phone is dead and on the charger.

Well. this is making my arm tired, so I'll blog a little later...maybe I can muster up some free time and FINALLY go to Trader Joe's today :)

Operation=Vegetable

I have come to realize, Chase will NOT eat a single veggie. I put all kinds of things in front of him, and he literally spits it right back out. SO I put a few veggie nuggets in front of him and BLAMMO! He ate it AND loved it! I was soo excited that I wrote on my grocery list all kinds of "MEAT" from Morning Star. shhh....it's tofu and veggies disguised as meat.

Big Bang Theory has it's 100th episode tonight I am soo stoked!

Well, the shower's free and it's SOO my turn :)
